Welcome to the Barefoot Bushcraft FAQ page — here we gather the most common questions from our visitors, answered with the same care we give to a bowstring before it’s drawn. By reading through these, you will be better prepared for your outdoor time with us, and therefore more able to enjoy the land in comfort.
The wind, the rain, and the snow are not obstacles — they are part of the living land. At Barefoot Bushcraft, we welcome each season’s gifts. When the rain falls, we work beneath tarps or in natural shelters. When snow blankets the ground, we gather around the fire.
As a result, it’s important to come prepared. Warm layers, dry coverings, and sturdy gear will keep the body comfortable while the spirit stays free.
Like any good trail, booking begins with a clear path. Use our online booking system to secure your spot.
For gatherings of more than four people, it is best to send us a message through our website chat, Facebook, or Instagram before booking.
If you are planning a party, online booking is required.
We offer industry-standard recurve bows — simple, reliable, and balanced, like the tools our ancestors might have carried if they’d had modern craftsmanship. Approved by Ontario Archery Association.and range from 16 to 30 pounds of draw weight, allowing both new and experienced archers to shoot in harmony with their strength. Our bows all conform to the requirements of the Ontario Physical Education Association
Yes — you may bring your own bow and rent our range. However, crossbows are not allowed for safety reasons.
Indeed. Our range meets Ontario Archery Association standards, with marked target distances of 10 and 18 metres — close enough for a beginner to learn form, yet far enough for a seasoned archer to test skill.
Most days, we carry on no matter the sky’s mood. However, when travel becomes dangerous or the cold is extreme, we may reschedule.
If a program is cancelled due to weather, we will work with you to arrange another date. Refunds are not offered, as our instructors prepare lessons and gather materials in advance.
If you are unsure about the status of your program, please call ahead. In addition, we will email you if the event is cancelled.
The forest teaches: layer your warmth like bark around a tree.
First, choose wool or synthetic base layers to keep warmth even when damp.
In addition, add outer layers you can shed or put on as your body’s heat changes.
Avoid cotton — it steals warmth when wet.
If snow or rain is likely, wear waterproof gear.
A good hat and gloves are essential, as they protect the body’s most vulnerable heat points.
We place no rule upon your sacred feet, which brought you to us.Barefoot, sandal, or boot — choose what feels right for you. In summer, many people go barefoot to feel the earth directly. However, be aware that this carries a higher risk of cuts or scrapes. Our grounds are covered in mulch, which is comfortable underfoot.
We are very much pro-choice. Many of our clients go barefoot, as long as they are aware there is a greater risk of cuts and injury.
We are busiest on Saturdays and Sundays. Therefore, if you wish to guarantee a space, booking online ahead of time is strongly recommended.
Yes — we keep an eco-toilet here on the land. If needed. They may not be the comfort you are used to, but have worked for hundreds of years.

Barefoot Bushcraft acknowledges the land on which we gather was the historic territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and acknowledging reminds us that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous peoples.
