Creating fire with a ferro rod
Step away from the modern world and return to the ways of your ancestors. In this Introduction to Bushcraft, you will learn timeless survival skills passed down through generations, rooted in respect for the land and the old ways.
“Making fire is a form of prayer. With your hands together you bow over and over hoping that fire will come and visit you. With the smoke rising, you send prayers and thanks to the sky. This is how the oldest Gods were worshipped. Gods of bone, and wood, and rock, and blood.” ~Luke McLaughlin (Holistic Survival School)
For countless generations, fire was the heart of every camp and the heartbeat of survival. Long before matches or lighters, our people coaxed flame from wood, stone, and steel. Using techniques like bow drill friction fire and sparks from rare earth metals such as cerium, fire brought warmth, protection, and the ability to shape the world around us.

Barefoot Bushcraft acknowledges the land on which we gather was the historic territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and acknowledging reminds us that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous peoples.
